About Bath and North East Somerset

Bath and North East Somerset is a unitary authority in the West of England, covering approximately 351 square kilometres of varied landscape from the World Heritage city of Bath through market towns to the rolling Somerset countryside. With a population of approximately 197,000 (2021 Census), the area is one of England's most visited and celebrated, attracting approximately 4.5 million tourists to Bath each year. History and Heritage: Aquae Sulis and the Georgian City Bath is one of only two cities in England to hold UNESCO World Heritage Site status (the other being Canterbury). The designation recognises the exceptional combination of Roman and Georgian heritage that makes Bath unique in the English-speaking world. The Romans established Aquae Sulis at Bath around 60 AD, constructing elaborate bath complexes around the hot springs that emerge from the limestone hillside at a constant temperature of approximately 45°C. The Roman Baths, now one of the finest Roman archaeological sites in northern Europe, preserve the Great Bath, the Sacred Spring, and extensive hypocaust (underfloor heating) systems. The water that feeds them fell as rain on the Mendip Hills approximately 10,000 years ago and has taken that time to filter down through limestone and be heated geothermally before emerging at Bath. Bath is the only place in the United Kingdom with naturally occurring hot springs. The Pump Room, built above the Roman Baths in the 18th century, was the social heart of Georgian Bath and is still used as a restaurant and concert venue. The Georgian city of Bath represents one of the greatest achievements of 18th-century English urban planning and architecture. John Wood the Elder and his son John Wood the Younger designed the Royal Crescent, The Circus, and much of the surrounding residential architecture that gives Bath its distinctive honey-coloured limestone character. The Royal Crescent — a sweeping arc of 30 terraced houses arranged in a perfect half-ellipse — completed in 1774, is widely considered the finest example of Georgian architecture in the world. The Circus, a circular arrangement of 33 houses, was designed by Wood the Elder and completed in 1768, modelled on the Colosseum in Rome but inverted so the façades face inwards. Jane Austen lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806 following her father's retirement, and two of her novels — Northanger Abbey and Persuasion — are set partly in the city. The Jane Austen Centre on Gay Street commemorates her years in Bath and attracts thousands of visitors annually. Bath Abbey, the centrepiece of the city's medieval heritage, is a late Perpendicular Gothic church of great beauty, built largely between 1499 and 1616. Its west façade depicts in carved stone angels climbing Jacob's Ladder to Heaven — a visual reference to the dream of its founding bishop. The interior is celebrated for its extraordinary fan-vaulted ceiling. Thermal Spa The Thermae Bath Spa, opened in 2006 above the ancient thermal springs, allows visitors to bathe in naturally warm mineral water for the first time since the Roman baths closed in the 5th century. The rooftop pool, with views over the Georgian roofscape of Bath, is one of England's most memorable bathing experiences. Education and Economy The University of Bath, founded in 1966, is consistently ranked among the top 10 universities in the UK and has particular excellence in engineering, science, and business. Bath Spa University is also located in the city. The local economy is driven by tourism, education, financial services, and professional services. The former North East Somerset coalfield area around Radstock and Midsomer Norton industrialised in the 19th century and has undergone sustained regeneration. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded 197,000 residents. The population is predominantly White British (approximately 90%) with significant student communities. Bath itself has one of the highest house prices of any city outside London, reflecting its desirability as a place to live.
