About Luton

Luton is a unitary authority and town in Bedfordshire, southeastern England, approximately 50 kilometres north of central London. With a population of approximately 225,000 (2021 Census), Luton is one of the most densely populated and ethnically diverse towns in England, a major aviation hub, and a centre of automotive and manufacturing heritage. History and Heritage: Hats and Cars Luton's traditional industries were straw hat-making and automotive manufacturing. The straw hat industry developed in Luton and the surrounding Bedfordshire villages from at least the 17th century, and by the Victorian era Luton was the hat-making capital of England. At the peak of production in the late 19th century, thousands of workers — primarily women — plaited straw into braid that was sewn into hats, bonnets, and other headwear. The Luton hat industry supplied the British Empire and exported to markets worldwide. The Museum of Luton preserves significant material relating to this distinctive local craft tradition. Vauxhall Motors established its first manufacturing plant in Luton in 1905, and the company has remained inseparably associated with the town ever since. For much of the 20th century, Vauxhall was one of Britain's largest car manufacturers, producing models including the Victor, Cavalier, Carlton, and Astra at the Luton plant. Today, following Vauxhall's acquisition by PSA Group and subsequently Stellantis, the Luton site focuses on the production of Vivaro vans. Vauxhall's continued presence, though at reduced scale, reflects over a century of automotive manufacturing heritage in Luton. London Luton Airport London Luton Airport, operated by Aena (previously AENA, the Spanish airport operator), is one of the UK's six major international airports and handles approximately 15–17 million passengers annually in normal operating years. The airport is a major hub for Wizz Air, easyJet, and Ryanair, serving budget leisure and business travellers to destinations across Europe and beyond. The airport is a critical employer for the Luton economy and a major driver of local demand for hotels, logistics, and transport services. Cultural Diversity Luton is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the United Kingdom outside London. The 2021 Census recorded that approximately 45% of Luton's residents identified as non-White-British — one of the highest proportions of any town in England. South Asian communities (predominantly Pakistani and Indian), Bangladeshi, Black African, Black Caribbean, and many other communities have established themselves in Luton from the 1950s onwards, initially recruited to work in the hat and automotive industries. The diversity of Luton is reflected in its extraordinary range of places of worship, food markets, restaurants, and cultural events. The town is one of the most multilingual in England, with over 100 languages spoken. Luton Town Football Club, founded in 1885, competes at Kenilworth Road stadium — one of the most compact and atmospheric grounds in English football. In May 2023, Luton Town achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history through the Championship play-offs, completing a remarkable rise from the fourth division of English football over the previous decade. Economic Geography Luton covers approximately 43 square kilometres — one of the smallest local authority areas in England by size but with a very high population density. The town's proximity to London (fast trains from Luton Airport Parkway reach St Pancras in approximately 22 minutes) and the M1 motorway make it attractive for businesses serving the capital. Distribution and logistics, healthcare, retail, and professional services are significant sectors alongside aviation and automotive. The University of Bedfordshire, with campuses in Luton and Bedford, provides higher education to approximately 20,000 students and contributes to research in areas including health, creative arts, and business. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 225,000 residents. The median age in Luton is among the lowest in England, reflecting the young age profile of many of its diverse communities. Luton's population has grown significantly in recent decades and is projected to continue growing.
