Portsmouth is a unitary authority and city on the southern coast of England in Hampshire, occupying Portsea Island — making it the only island city in England — as well as the mainland areas of Havant and Fareham. With a population of approximately 215,000 (2021 Census), Portsmouth is one of the most important naval cities in British and world history, home to the world's oldest dry dock still in use and an extraordinary collection of historic warships. History and Heritage Portsmouth's history is inseparable from the sea and from the Royal Navy. The first recorded reference to Portsmouth as a port dates to 1194, and the construction of a dock began around 1212. The medieval and Tudor periods saw Portsmouth develop as the principal embarkation point for military expeditions to France. Henry V mustered his fleet at Portsmouth and Solent before sailing for Normandy and the Battle of Agincourt (1415), and the town became the primary base for the Royal Navy's operations in the Channel and beyond. The most famous vessel to have sailed from Portsmouth is HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805), the engagement at which Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets and was himself fatally wounded on the quarterdeck. Nelson's body was returned to England preserved in a cask of brandy, and HMS Victory was subsequently preserved in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard as a permanent memorial to Trafalgar and to Nelson's genius. Victory is the world's oldest commissioned warship still afloat and is one of the most visited historic ships in the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is one of the world's greatest concentrations of naval heritage. In addition to HMS Victory, the dockyard is home to the Mary Rose — the Tudor warship built for Henry VIII that capsized and sank in the Solent in July 1545 during an engagement with a French invasion fleet. The Mary Rose was raised from the seabed in 1982 in one of the most complex and technically demanding marine salvage operations in history, watched live on television by an estimated 60 million viewers worldwide. The preserved hull, along with approximately 19,000 objects recovered from the ship, is displayed in the Mary Rose Museum, which opened in its current form in 2013, offering an unparalleled window into Tudor maritime life. HMS Warrior (1860), the world's first iron-hulled armoured warship, is also moored at the dockyard. The D-Day Story Portsmouth played a central role in the planning and launching of Operation Overlord — the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944 — the largest seaborne invasion in history. Eisenhower's headquarters were in the area, and the vast majority of the assault troops and landing craft that crossed the Channel from the Solent in the early hours of D-Day departed from Portsmouth and the surrounding harbours. The D-Day Story museum at Southsea houses the Overlord Embroidery — a 272-foot (83m) embroidered frieze depicting the story of D-Day, created by 20 seamstresses over five years and the longest work of embroidery in the world. Famous Birthplaces Portsmouth has an extraordinary record as a birthplace of great British figures. Charles Dickens was born at Mile End Terrace (now 393 Old Commercial Road) on 7 February 1812, and his birthplace is preserved as a museum celebrating his life and work. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the greatest engineer of the Victorian era, was also born in Portsmouth (in 1806). Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, commander of Allied ground forces on D-Day, was born in Kennington but educated in Portsmouth. The Spinnaker Tower The Spinnaker Tower, a 170-metre observation tower at Gunwharf Quays on Portsmouth Harbour, opened in 2005 and has become the defining modern landmark of the city's skyline. The tower's viewing platforms offer views across Portsmouth Harbour, the Solent, the Isle of Wight, and on clear days the English Channel. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded 215,000 residents on Portsea Island and in the mainland areas. Portsmouth is a working-class city with a strong naval heritage identity and approximately 75% White British population.
