About Salford
Salford is a metropolitan borough and city within Greater Manchester in northwest England. Covering approximately 97 square kilometres to the immediate west of Manchester city centre along the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Irwell, Salford had a population of approximately 264,000 at the 2021 Census. Though geographically contiguous with Manchester, Salford is a separate city — it received city status in 1926 — with its own council, traditions, and identity fiercely maintained against the tendency to conflate it with its larger neighbour. History and Industrial Heritage Salford shares Manchester's industrial history: the two cities grew together during the Industrial Revolution, and Salford's docks on the Manchester Ship Canal — opened in 1894 — became one of the busiest inland ports in Britain by the early 20th century, handling millions of tons of cargo annually and employing thousands of dock workers. The docks' decline from the 1970s onwards, culminating in their closure in 1982, left Salford Docks a wasteland of derelict quays and warehouses — a challenge that would eventually be met by one of the most successful regeneration projects in British urban history. L.S. Lowry Lawrence Stephen Lowry (1887–1976) is the most celebrated artist in Salford's history and one of the most distinctive figures in 20th-century British art. Working as a rent collector for most of his professional life, Lowry painted in his spare time, producing a unique body of work depicting the industrial landscape of the Salford and Manchester area in a highly distinctive style — match-stick figures moving through a world of smoking mill chimneys, gasometers, terraced streets, and football matches. His paintings, initially dismissed by critics as naive and provincial, have achieved enormous posthumous recognition: they regularly sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction, and their depictions of working-class life in industrial England have become cultural touchstones. The Lowry, a major arts centre on Salford Quays, is named in his honour and houses the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings. MediaCityUK MediaCityUK, developed from 2007 and opened in 2011 on the former Salford Docks site, is one of the most significant media production hubs in Europe. The BBC moved major operations there from London — including BBC Sport, BBC Breakfast, BBC Children's, and BBC Radio 5 Live — employing several thousand staff. ITV's production company dock10 studios is also based at MediaCityUK, as is the University of Salford and multiple digital media companies. MediaCityUK is the centrepiece of the most successful regeneration of former dock land in the north of England, transforming what was a derelict wasteland into a vibrant media, technology, and arts quarter. Ordsall Hall Ordsall Hall, in the Ordsall area of Salford, is a remarkably well-preserved medieval timber-framed manor house dating from the 14th century, with significant additions from the 15th and 16th centuries. The great hall, with its open hearth and medieval roof timbers, and the star chamber (with its decorative carved ceiling bosses in the form of stars) are among the finest surviving examples of medieval domestic architecture in northwest England. The hall is managed by Salford City Council and is open to the public. Salford University and Education The University of Salford, founded as the Royal Technical Institute in 1896 and granted university status in 1967, has been a significant driver of regeneration and research in the city. Its main campus is in the Frederick Road area, with further facilities at MediaCityUK. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 264,000 residents. Salford is moderately diverse, with approximately 76% White British and significant communities of South Asian, Black, and mixed heritage, concentrated particularly in the inner city areas close to Manchester.
