About Camden

Camden is a London borough in north-central London, England. Covering approximately 22 square kilometres stretching from the edge of the City at Holborn in the south to the heights of Hampstead and Highgate in the north, Camden had a population of approximately 270,000 at the 2021 Census. One of the most culturally rich and intellectually distinguished of all London boroughs, Camden encompasses the British Museum and Bloomsbury's literary and academic traditions, the bohemian markets and counter-cultural energy of Camden Town, the literary landscapes of Hampstead Heath, and three of London's major railway termini. The borough has been home to a remarkable concentration of writers, artists, scientists, and political thinkers over several centuries. The British Museum The British Museum in Bloomsbury — one of the most visited museums in the world, welcoming approximately six million visitors annually — houses approximately eight million objects spanning two million years of human history and culture. Founded in 1753 (the first national public museum in the world), the British Museum was built on the collections of Sir Hans Sloane. Its highlights include the Rosetta Stone (the key that unlocked ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, captured by the French, surrendered to Britain in 1801), the Parthenon sculptures (the "Elgin Marbles," from the Athenian Acropolis, central to an ongoing dispute between Britain and Greece), the Lindow Man (an Iron Age bog body), the Lewis Chessmen (12th-century Norse chess pieces), the Sutton Hoo helmet, and vast collections of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Near Eastern, Asian, and African artefacts. Hampstead Heath and Literary Connections Hampstead Heath, covering approximately 320 hectares of ancient woodland, ponds, and grassland on the heights above north London, is one of London's greatest open spaces. From Parliament Hill, the panoramic view of London extends from the City to Canary Wharf. Camden Market Camden Market — a collective name for a cluster of adjacent markets around Camden Lock on the Regent's Canal — is one of the most visited tourist attractions in London, drawing approximately 100,000 visitors on busy weekends. Originating in the early 1970s as a small arts and crafts market, Camden Market expanded through the 1980s and 1990s to become the epicentre of London's alternative culture, street fashion, and live music scene. The market and surrounding streets have been closely associated with punk, goth, rock, and indie music. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 270,000 residents. Camden is highly diverse: approximately 58% White (including many European migrants), 13% Asian, 7% Black, and 9% mixed or other. The borough has one of the highest proportions of young adults and students of any London borough, driven by University College London, the London School of Economics (just over the boundary), and numerous other higher education institutions.
