About Havering

Havering is a London borough in east London, England, on the border with Essex. Covering approximately 112 square kilometres — one of the largest London boroughs by area — Havering had a population of approximately 260,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough has a distinctly different character from the inner London boroughs: largely suburban and semi-rural, with significant areas of Green Belt, a long history as a royal manor and hunting ground, and a notably well-preserved Georgian windmill that is one of the finest examples of its type in England. The Royal Liberty of Havering The area known as "Havering" has been associated with the English monarchy since at least the 12th century. Havering Palace — a series of royal manor houses on the site of what is now the village of Havering-atte-Bower — was used by English monarchs from Henry II onwards as a country retreat north of London. Edward the Confessor, Henry III, and a succession of Plantagenet and Tudor monarchs stayed at or near Havering, and Queen Elizabeth I visited the palace on several occasions. The village of Havering-atte-Bower still retains its ancient character, with a village green, stocks, and the Church of St John the Evangelist (whose south wall incorporates medieval masonry from the original palace chapel). The ancient Royal Liberty of Havering — a jurisdictional enclave with special privileges granted by the Crown — gave its name to the modern borough. Upminster Windmill Upminster Windmill, a smock mill standing on the edge of Upminster town centre, was built in 1803 and is one of the best-preserved windmills in England. A Grade I listed building, the mill retains its original sails, fantail, and all its internal machinery in working order — a rare survival of a complete working windmill. The mill ground flour commercially until 1934 and is now a museum open to the public, with guided tours illustrating the technology and social history of windmill milling in the London area. Romford and Market Heritage Romford, the largest town in the borough and its main commercial centre, has been a market town since 1247, when King Henry III granted a market charter. Romford Market, held three days a week in the market place in the town centre, is one of the oldest and largest street markets in east London and has been a feature of local commercial life continuously for nearly eight centuries. The town also developed as an important coaching stop on the road from London to Colchester and Norwich, and several Georgian coaching inns survive in the town centre. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 260,000 residents. Havering is one of the least ethnically diverse London boroughs: approximately 83% White British, one of the highest proportions of any London borough, with small but growing Asian and Black communities.
