About Wandsworth
Wandsworth is a London borough in south London, England. Covering approximately 34 square kilometres on the south bank of the Thames between Battersea in the north and Tooting in the south, Wandsworth had a population of approximately 330,000 at the 2021 Census. The borough contains one of the most celebrated industrial landmarks in the London skyline, a historic venue for one of the most important political debates in English history, and a range of open commons and parklands that make it one of the most desirable of the inner south London boroughs. Battersea Power Station Battersea Power Station — one of the most iconic buildings in London and a Grade II* listed structure — is a vast Art Deco industrial building on the Thames at Battersea, whose four distinctive white chimneys are among the most recognisable elements of the London skyline. The station was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (who also designed Bankside Power Station, now Tate Modern, and the classic British red telephone box) and built in two phases: the original A station (1929–1935) and the mirror-image B station (1944–1955). The station generated electricity for London until its closure in 1983 and then stood empty for nearly four decades while successive redevelopment plans came and went, its magnificent turbine halls and art deco interior decaying. The building was ultimately redeveloped in the 2010s and early 2020s as a major mixed-use scheme incorporating offices, apartments, retail, restaurants, and the European headquarters of Apple Inc.; the Northern line extension, opening in 2021 with new stations at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms, brought Underground access to this previously poorly served part of the riverside for the first time. The Putney Debates Putney, on the Thames in the west of the borough, was the scene in October and November 1647 of the Putney Debates — one of the most remarkable episodes in the history of English democracy and constitutional government. In the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Putney, delegates of Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army — including Cromwell himself, his son-in-law Henry Ireton, and "Agitator" representatives of the rank and file — debated the future constitution of England. The soldiers' representatives, many of them Levellers, argued for a written constitution, annual or biennial parliaments, universal male suffrage, freedom of religion, and equality before the law; radical ideas that were far ahead of their time. The debates were eventually closed by Cromwell, but the ideas expressed in the Putney Debates are regarded as foundational to the development of British liberal democracy. Tooting, Wandsworth Common and Open Spaces Tooting Bec Lido, in Tooting, is one of the largest outdoor freshwater swimming pools in Britain — 90 metres long and opened in 1906 — and a beloved institution for south London open-water swimmers year-round. Wandsworth, Clapham, Tooting Bec, and Tooting Graveney Commons provide an interconnected green corridor across the borough. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 330,000 residents. Wandsworth is moderately diverse: approximately 68% White, 9% Asian, 7% Black, and 9% mixed or other. The borough consistently records some of the highest average earnings of any inner London borough and is particularly popular with young professionals.
